Electronic musician Hawksmoor, aka James McKeown, releases ‘Head Coach’; a beautifully immersive instrumental album inspired by the druidic, Solstice referencing layout of Milton Keynes...

It’s a lesser known fact that the layout of English new town Milton Keynes was shifted by a few degrees when its planners realised that, in doing so, its grid-like layout would come into alignment with the sunrise on the summer solstice.

This ‘urban planning as druidic vision’ of the 1970s extends to present-day street names including Midsummer Boulevard, a track on the new album ‘Head Coach’ by Hawksmoor, a project inspired by the ‘psychogeography’ of Milton Keynes – a term used for the exploration of urban environments that emphasizes personal connections to place. Other titles similarly reference real locations in the city.

Feeling that the album of electronic loops and analogue bass lines was best digested as a continuous, fully immersive listening experience, free from the distraction of having to turn over a record or tape, Head Coach has become the first ever CD release for the label Spun Out Of Control. It follows previous Hawksmoor releases on the label: ‘On Prescription’, ‘Methods Of Dreaming’ and ‘Concrete Island’, the latter a collaboration with The Heartwood Institute, shortly to be re-issued on vinyl.

With design and layout by Kevin ‘DJ Food’ Foakes under his Openmind alias, the catalogue number for ‘Head Coach’ is SOOC CD1. Limited edition digipak includes 12-page booklet.

This is probably my favourite album..when does it get a repress...soon I hope.. I get the same melancholia when I listen to this as I get when i hear the strains of a well drilled pit band drifting through the ether of my mind... these albums speak of and about the sociology of people and thier places in a crumbling socialistic infrastructure ,and of the industry that employs and shapes thier lives,in the current tense and also a nostalgic magical utopian tense of public information film christopherogley

Great record. wears it's influences proudly ..but retains a sliver of identity that is uniquely British and has a northern feel to it..I think that these geographic musical vignettes are realy evocotive of northern Newtown Uber estates and satellite communities..I hope this translates to a wider audience for him...he deserves the attention. give him his due .NOW . christopherogley
